In the Spring of 1920, the First Red Scare died off and Americans resumed the leisurely life style. During World War II, America was allied with Soviet Union and yet, the Alien Registration Act (1940) prohibited the spread of Communism. When the Second Red Scare rolled around, Americans drastically changed their views on Communism. The cultural turning point is the nation-wide fear and hate of all things Communist. Somehow, Americans had become so diametrically opposed to Communism that leaders would go so far as to violate civil liberties on the reasoning that there might be a grand Communist conspiracy on hand. Americans became fearful of a nuclear war and build bomb shelters in their home. Americans persecuted one another out of fear and distrust. A political turning point during the McCarthyism era was that all left-wing supporters and Communist or Socialist supporters were blacklisted and ousted from the political scene. Left-wingers were labeled generally as Communists and enemies of the State. In Hollywood, many actors and playwrights like Arthur Miller and Dalton Trumbo were blacklisted and left for other countries. The general turning point of everything was the change of American thinking of Communism. Instead of merely picking out Communists, the House of Un-American Activities violated so called "unalienable rights" and destroyed the lives of many Americans without proof.
